The Malta International Airport Under-9 Football Tournament
Malta International Airport true to its Corporate Social Responsibility is
committed to support sports and sportsmanship in Malta. This is being done
primarily by encouraging young sport talent to emerge and moreover to gain
exposure and experience in the course of international exchanges.
To this end MIA has invited youth football nurseries to participate at a
children’s under-9 football tournament. The winning team and runner-up will be
the guests of MIA to participate at an international tournament in Austria which
will be organised by MIA’s partner airport VIE from the 21st to the 24th of May
2009 for children’s teams from the countries where VIE has partnership concerns
in the airports there. In fact teams from Hungary, Germany, Slovakia and
Austria are expected to participate at this event. The tournament is intended
to be an annual event in Malta as qualifier for the international football
competition and was this year initially hosted by Melita FC.
Julian Jaeger was invited to draw the tournament fixtures and addressed the
teams present. Julian Jaeger reiterated MIA’s commitment to the promotion of
sports in Malta maintaining that sports education among the younger generation
is an investment in itself to enhance a healthier society for the future.
The 12 clubs that participated were Melita YN, Tarxien YN, Pieta’ YN, Zebbug
YN, B’Kara YN, Hamrun YN, Mosta YN, Lija/Iklin YN, Paola Hibs YN, Valletta YN,
Floriana YN and B’Bugia YN. The winners were Birkirkara FC YN and Mosta YN.
